Willem Koekkoek was born in Amsterdam in 1839. He descended from a long line of painters. He was taught by his father, who was the marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek senior. Willem Koekkoek admired the work of Cornelis Springer and specialized in painting Dutch, romantic townscapes. He gained both national and international success during his lifetime.
