Rob Graafland was born in 1875 in Maastricht. Lateron, Graafland moved to Amsterdam and attended the Academy. After his studies, Rob Graafland became a teacher and taught drawing in 1898 at the Stadteekeninstituut in Maastricht. His work is characterized by a bright and zingy use of colour and an impressionist brush stroke. In order to enhance children’s drawing talents, he co-founded the Sunday school for Decorative Arts. Rob Graafland traveled to the US in 1905, to give way to his own artistic aspirations. A couple of years on, he, together with Herman Gouwe, founded the Limburgse Kunstkring. Rob Graafland has exhibited his works i.a. at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, together with fellow-artists Jan Sluijters and Piet Mondriaan.
