Johan Dijkstra lived and worked in both Groningen and Amsterdam. He attended the Minerva Academy in Groningen and the Royal Academy of Amsterdam. Johan Dijkstra was an important expressionist and was part of the Groningen art movement De Ploeg. He depicted the Groningen landscape and made portraits, using paint, watercolour, pencils and crayons. After he became acquainted with the works of Kirchner in 1925, his own work became brighter in colour and the shapes more loosly interpreted. His work can be found in numerous collections, both private and in museums, such as the Groninger Museum and the Haags Municipal Museum.
