Jannes de Vries lived and worked in Meppel, Amsterdam, Parijs and Groningen. He was educated at the Rijksnormaalschool van Teekenonderwijzers in Amsterdam. After, Jannes de Vries studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Parijs and made study travels to the south of Italy and northern Africa.
Jannes de Vries painted in oil and watercolour, drew landscapes, figures and biblical scenes. He was a member of the artistic movement “De Ploeg”. The Haags Gemeentemuseum as well as the Royal collection have works by Jannes de Vries.
