Munthe lived and worked in Düsseldorf, The Hague and Katwijk aan Zee. He was educated at the Academy in Düsseldorf. There he predominantly painted beachscapes and seascapes with fishermen and ‘bomschuiten’, a type of flatboats. Munthe added ‘Morgenstjerne’ (Norwegian for Morning Star) to his nameas a suffix, to distinguish himself from his uncle and namesake G.P.F.W. Munthe, a well-known landscape painter. Morgenstjerne Munthe was a member of the Amsterdam art society ‘Arti et Amicitiae’. Works by his hand can be found at among other the Kröller Müller museum.
